History
We have been paving the way for more than 90 years
The beginnings of Colas go back to 1922, when the Cold Spray bitumen emulsion was patented in London. The innovation was called Cold Asphalt in 1924. The name Colas is derived from the shortened form of Cold Asphalt.
Colas was founded in 1929 with the aim of managing patent rights for cold asphalt, which marked a kind of revolution in the field of road construction.
Over the decades, Colas expanded its business scope, branching out into activities related to its core road business, mainly construction materials, and in the early 2000s also into railways.
Present since the 1930s in Europe and Africa, and then in North America in the 1960s, Colas has multiplied its bases on all five continents. Guided by this same original pioneering spirit, the Group has developed innovative products, processes and solutions. Today, Colas continues to innovate to responsibly and sustainably meet ever-increasing, ever-changing mobility needs.
We are part of the Bouygues group, which became the company's main shareholder in 1986, and since 2023, Bouygues is the 100% owner of Colas.
